What to do when talent is off the menu

What to do when talent is off the menu

We all know that staff supply is one of the biggest challenges facing hospitality; good people are hard to find and keep. Check out the following tips...

One of our top tips for retention, and attraction of talent, is to take away the tedium of paperwork. Safe Food Pro makes managing food safety seamless, and a seamless process means there is a lot less pressure on staff.

But what else can you do? Here are three top tips from Dave McGregor, Founder of Helping Hands.

1. Demonstrate a people-first approach

Whenever there’s a shortage in any industry, it’s an employee’s market, which means you need to delight potential employees as much as you would your customers. How do you make your team feel valued? A great example of this is Coco Cantina’s; when you walk in the door, you’re greeted by staff wearing t-shirts that say ‘Be Kind’, so you really get a sense that they treat their staff like family and they want their customers to do the same.

2. Know your ‘why’

Good people want to work for a business that is a reflection of who they are. Well-known author Simon Sinek said “If you hire people because they can do the job, they’ll work for your money. But if you hire people who buy what you believe in they’ll work for you with blood, sweat and tears…. People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.”

The WHY is the purpose, cause or belief that drives your business. So, ask yourself, why do you do what you do? How can you demonstrate this? Think about how ‘they why’ flows through the business, right through to what you say in your job ads.

3. Allow time to find good staff.

In an effort to save money, many employers wait until the last minute to employ someone. It can take around four weeks, or longer to hire the right person and there is often a high churn rate early on. Particularly for busy periods, advertise early.

Thanks Dave for your great tips.

We advise our customers to leverage Safe Food Pro as a way to attract new talent. Because seamless systems results in less paperwork.
